Movie Copyright Compliance at a Discount for NCCAP Members

Print ArticleEmail Article

The Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC), an independent copyright licensing agency, has partnered with the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) for the purpose of offering its Umbrella License to NCCAP members at a discounted rate, allowing facilities employing NCCAP members to show movies and other programming in a copyright-compliant manner.

The license provides senior living and health care facilities the public performance rights to show movies from more than 425 Hollywood studios, independent, special interest and foreign producers. Once a license is secured, activity directors can rent or purchase movies and play them without any further reporting.

According to the US Copyright Act, Title 17 of the United States Code, copyrighted motion pictures and other programs that are available for rental or purchase in any legal format, are intended for personal, private, and home use only. Exhibitions outside of the home, such as within a senior living and health care facility, require a public performance license. Regardless of whether an admission fee is charged, this legal requirement applies equally to for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

MPLC has also partnered with LeadingAge and American Health Care Association (AHCA/NCAL).
