Gerontological nursing is the application of a body of knowledge and skills to provide nursing care that meets the unique needs of the diverse older adult population. According to Mary Rita Hurley, MPA, RN, executive director of the Oregon Center for Nursing and a board member of the National Gerontological Nursing Association, "the critical element that differentiates this population from others is their needs related to aging processes and developmental stage. Gerontological nursing looks at key clinical information and issues central to caring for the highly specialized needs of older adults in that context."
